Amber

Our store specialises in amber jewellery, with numerous designs, colours and types making up our wide range.

Amber is fossilised and preserved tree resin that is tens of millions of years old, and is organic in origin. Amber was produced from plant resins from ancient forests and prehistoric trees. Millions of years ago the plant resin dripped and oozed down the trees, trapping insects, leaves, twigs, seeds, fur, hair, flowers and all other kinds of debris that it came across. Everything that was trapped became preserved in time. Amber varies in colour, most common being the golden-brown 'amber' colour, but can also be found in white, blue, green, red, yellow and black. The levels of transparency also vary, white amber for example can be quite opaque, whereas yellow is usually transparent. Every piece of amber is unique, as the creation and appearance was dependant on the environment, every single piece is different. The name amber comes from the Arabic word, anbar, meaning ambergris. Amber has been in use for thousands of years, even dating back to the Ancient Egyptians, who many believed used amber in their mummification process. Throughout the years it has been used for all kinds of purposes, as jewellery and ornamental objects, to being used for religious and medicinal purposes. It is widely believed that amber has healing powers, which include improving immunity and strengthening the body. In many cultures it is customary for teething babies to wear amber necklaces or bracelets, as amber is said to help with the pain and discomfort teething babies experience.

Most of the worlds amber comes from the Baltic coastline, and all of Babushkas amber is sourced from Gdansk, Poland. Our amber jewellery is created by talented Polish jewellers and jewellery designers. Our jewellery pieces consist of amber alone, or are set in 925 Sterling Silver, depending on the design. We have a wide range of necklaces, rings, bracelets, pendants and earrings in many modern as well as classic designs.
